how often do I actually need to change my air filter?

Your air filter has a big job to do for your Kingman, Arizona, home, but many people don’t understand its importance and how to care for it. While there’s no magic number for how often you need to change your air filter, there are guidelines you can use to help understand how to care for it.

As a General Rule

In a nutshell, you should replace your air filters anytime they’re dirty. As a general rule, check your air filters about once a month, especially during peak seasons (summer and winter). That doesn’t mean you absolutely need to change them every month, but you should at least check to make sure they’re not clogged with dust and dirt.

Mitigating Circumstances

Although there are general guidelines for how often you should change your air filters, there are also mitigating circumstances where you might need to change or at least check your filter more frequently. If you have pets in your home, your air filters will likely get clogged with hair and pet dander faster. If you notice dirt and dust in your home or your utility bills spike, your filter might need replacing.

Other Considerations

Just because the guidelines say to check your air filter once a month doesn’t mean you should neglect your air filter just because a month hasn’t passed. If you notice dust buildup, higher-than-normal energy bills, or if you’re sneezing and coughing more than usual, then check your air filter to see if it’s to blame. If you air quality is suffering, or you are running your HVAC system more than usual, then you also need to check your air filter more often. Don’t ignore your filter; use your best judgment to make sure you change it as often as necessary.
