Las Vegas Information

History

According to the archaeological record, the history of Las Vegas began in prehistoric times. After serving as the home base for a succession of native tribes, Las Vegas and the surrounding valley were re-discovered and settled during the middle of the 19th century. During the 1880s, the State Land Act spurred the sale of discounted land to ranchers and homesteaders throughout the region, boosting the local population and resulting in rapid economic development. By the 1930s, the construction of the nearby Hoover Dam had attracted thousands of workers and their families. The first major casinos and entertainment venues popped up in the region during the 1940s and 50s. Today, Las Vegas is an international tourist destination and hub for high-tech industry.

Geography

Las Vegas occupies much of the central and western segments of the Las Vegas Valley, a large basin that holds the majority of Nevada’s population. Although the city’s physical landscape is largely flat or gently rolling, its municipal boundaries do intersect with the foothills at the western edge of the valley. Most of Las Vegas is covered with low-density residential and commercial development. Downtown Las Vegas is a bit more densely packed and contains many of the region’s older casinos. The city’s undeveloped parcels consist largely of scrubland and rock.

Population and Demographics

Las Vegas has a year-round population of more than 600,000. This makes it the largest city in Nevada and one of the 25 largest in the United States. Las Vegas’s headcount has more than doubled since 1990 and continues to grow at an impressive pace. The city’s population is highly diverse and boasts a mix of retirees, second-homeowners, new arrivals from other parts of the country and world, young families and affluent professionals. Thanks to a concentration of high-tech companies and other “new economy” businesses on the city’s northern edge, Las Vegas is also known as a top destination for tech talent.

Things to Do in Las Vegas, Nevada

There’s plenty to do and see in Las Vegas. The area around Fremont Street contains some of the region’s oldest casinos as well as numerous entertainment venues that enthrall tourists. Although the bulk of the Strip lies in the adjacent municipality of Paradise, visitors staying in downtown Las Vegas can access its casinos with relative ease. For those who prefer outdoor recreation to gaming, the mountains west of town harbor miles of trails and numerous campsites. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park are particularly popular with locals and tourists alike. Charleston Peak offers excellent views of the surrounding mountains and basins.

Climate and Weather

Las Vegas has a mild, arid climate that’s marked by cool winters, extremely hot summers and relatively little precipitation throughout the year. Average high temperatures exceed 100 degrees during the summer months and occasionally reach into the 110s. During the spring and fall, conditions moderate somewhat. The period from late summer through early winter tends to be a bit wetter than other times of year. However, Las Vegas receives less than five inches of rain per year and is considered the driest big city in North America.
