Spring is the traditional season for cleaning your Henderson, Nevada, house, as the festivities of winter fade and the promise of summer entertaining sits on the horizon. Refresh your spring cleaning and tackle four of the following easily overlooked tasks, including cleaning your window sills and changing the air filters in your HVAC system.
Dust the Lights
Your lights work to keep your home bright, but how often do you do a little work for them? Cleaning off your light fixtures is an ideal task in your spring cleaning routine. Choose a bright, sunny day for this job, since you’ll want to leave your lights off for several hours before you clean them.
Begin by cleaning your lamp shades. Use a microfiber cloth to remove dust from plastic shades. If you have a fabric shade, clean it with a lint roller, a soft, unused paintbrush, or your vacuum’s brush attachment. Remove as much of the built-up dust and dirt as possible.
If your lamp shade has stains or spots on it, dilute a few drops of mild dish soap in a large bucket or bathtub of warm water. Dip the entire shade in the liquid, swirl gently, and remove. Repeat several times. Rinse the shade in cool water until the water runs clear, and leave the shade in a sunny place to dry.
Dust your light bulbs, fans, lamp bases, and other parts of your light fixtures with a soft cloth and dusting spray. You may be surprised to find how much brighter your bulbs glow in freshly cleaned fixtures.
Clean Your Windowsills
Your windowsills probably go unseen most of the year, but you may see them a bit more in spring and summer if you like to let fresh breezes into your home.
To remove dirt in the windowsills, dilute a few drops of tea tree oil in a bottle of water. Spray the solution onto the windowsills and let the mixture sit for 15 minutes. Scrub the area with an old toothbrush and wipe away the moisture with a clean cloth. Use this opportunity to check your weather stripping for signs of wear and replace any damaged areas as needed to improve the energy efficiency of your windows.
Scrub the Trim
Many people remember to dust the surfaces that are at or near eye level, such as tables and shelves. However, you can easily overlook surfaces that are small, out of the way, and closer to the ground.
Lower yourself to the floor and take a look at your trim. If you’re not in the habit of cleaning the trim in your home, you’ll probably find a fine layer of dust settled along the top. Although the trim has a slim surface, it extends through your entire house and may be responsible for dust that may be impacting your home’s indoor air quality.
Cleaning the trim can be a time-consuming task, but fairly straightforward. Use a damp cloth and run it along the upper edges of the trim. When you’re finished, run a slim vacuum cleaner attachment along the bottom of the trim where it meets the carpet to pick up any loose dust that you displaced while you were cleaning.
Change Your HVAC System’s Air Filters
Most homes have at least two filters that regularly keep the air clean. You should change the filter in your HVAC system once every one to three months. A clean filter will not only keep your air cleaner, but it will also improve the overall energy efficiency of your heating and cooling systems.
The second filter you need to pay attention to is in your vacuum cleaner. Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner may have a replaceable filter that you simply change for a new one or a reusable filter that you need to clean with a rinse of water. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines for information on how often you should change this filter, but never go more than six months without making a change.
