Are you looking for New Year’s resolutions that will impact both your own Lake Havasu, Arizona, home, and the rest of the world? Work for the greater good by reducing your carbon footprint, minimizing energy use, and trimming your utility bills all at once with these resolutions. Here are four home energy savings resolutions to make this year:
Resolution #1: Plug into More Power Strips
Power strips are a great solution for vampire energy users like your computer or television. These appliances drain energy even when they’re off or sleeping. Resolve to keep major appliances like these plugged into power strips and turn the strips off when you’re not using the associated devices.
Resolution #2: Use Your Ceiling Fans Right
Resolve to pay more attention to your ceiling fans and use them correctly throughout the year. You should set your fans to rotate counter-clockwise in summer to pull hot air up and create a wind chill effect that brings cold air down. In winter, set fans to move clockwise so they’re pushing hot air from the top of the room down where you can enjoy it.
Resolution #3: Stop Playing with the Thermostat
Do you change your thermostat settings multiple times throughout the day? Install a programmable thermostat and resolve to break your bad habit of tweaking the temp regularly. Your HVAC system is more efficient when it maintains a set temperature for at least eight hours at a stretch. Nudging the temperature up or down to use less heating and cooling at night and when you’re gone will improve your energy efficiency as well.
Resolution #4: Stick to a Maintenance Schedule
Are you a bit lax with your home maintenance routine? It happens to the best of us, but you can improve the operation and lifespan of your HVAC system by scheduling regular tuneups. Resolve to schedule a visit from your HVAC technician twice a year – have your air conditioner serviced in spring, and your heater tuned up in the fall.
