Our team at Ambient Edge is excited to announce this year’s winner of the Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship: Sandra Frenia! Out of all the applications we received, Sandra’s resiliency throughout her cancer journey and her new perspective on life stood out to us.
Our team is proud to offer this scholarship to help give students who are pursuing their dreams the opportunity to get financial assistance. We hope that this scholarship continues to help students achieve their goals.
What Is the Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship?
The team at Ambient Edge decided to establish the Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship as many of us know friends or family members who have been diagnosed, and some of us have experienced cancer personally. This scholarship exists as a way to pay it forward and strengthen our pledge to promote health, happiness and sustainability creating a positive impact in every community we serve.
From our experience, we’ve introduced the Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship to help hardworking college students who have battled cancer – or are still fighting – to have the opportunity to be recognized for their strength. When students apply, they have the chance to win $1,000 that they can use toward their studies for things like books, tuition, and other essentials.
To qualify for this scholarship, you must be a student who has been diagnosed with cancer or have someone in your family who has been diagnosed. Other requirements for this scholarship include:
- Currently enrolled or accepted to an accredited college/university in the U.S. Undergraduate and graduate students are both welcome, as are incoming first-year students.
- Your GPA is 3.0 or higher.
- Submission of a copy of your transcript, along with your application and essay
Our 2022 Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship Winner: Sandra Frenia
Sandra Frenia is the winner of our Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship for this year. We were greatly impressed by her drive and the positive perspective she has on life.
Sandra chose to apply for the scholarship because of her and her son’s personal connection to cancer.
Sandra’s Story
In 2016, Sandra was diagnosed with GIST (G.I Stromal Tumor) as well as the genetic disorder Neurofibromatosis. She had always dreamed of studying to become a nurse to help people, and when her son was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis in 2007, the frequent visits she had to make to the hospital reignited her passion for nursing.
But her journey to her dreams and her son’s health wasn’t easy. When her son had to have surgeries and get cancer treatment, she didn’t think she’d be able to pursue her passion. This occurred during the time of the pandemic, so she was able to look online to find a pathway to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse.
After researching, she applied to Bucks County Community College and was accepted as a student in the college’s nursing program. When we talked to Sandra in an interview, she shared that being a survivor and a caregiver has given her a new perspective on life. She realized that tomorrow or the day after is never guaranteed, and this has taught her to let go of the little things.
She now focuses on the present moment, and she has changed her lifestyle choices, like eating healthier foods, staying away from toxic chemicals, and taking a positive outlook on life. Sandra and her son’s journey is inspiring, and that’s why we are so proud to award her with the Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship. Even though she had to take care of herself and her son, she never let go of her dreams.
What’s Next for Sandra Frenia?
Sandra and her son are doing well, her son’s most recent MRI was stable, and he just started his senior year of high school. Now that Sandra and her son are in good health, she is ready to fully pursue her career as a nurse.
She will begin clinicals in her nursing program this fall. She is eager to start making a positive difference in people’s lives and spreading joy to the patients she works with. We cannot express how proud our team is of Sandra, and we hope that our scholarship can help her have a fantastic college experience.
We want to thank Sandra again for sharing her story, as well as everyone who applied. Our team knows the pain that cancer can bring to a family and even a community.
