Air Conditioning Units have come a long way from the energy-sucking noisy units from ten years ago. If you still have one in your home, you’re probably paying way too much in electrical costs while your unit struggles to keep up with the Las Vegas desert environment.
Today, ultra-efficient air conditioning units are quieter, better for the environment, and super efficient. They use less electricity than older air conditioners. Homes can be cooled with units that use 1,700 watts instead of your Grandpa’s a/c unit that sucked up 6,000 watts of power! Lower electric bills and a cooler home make most homeowners decide it’s finally time to evolve with the technology.
A Quick History of Indoor Air Coolers
Popular Mechanics has a fun article from a couple years ago that tracked some of the highlights of our evolution toward today’s modern air conditioning unit:
- In the 1830s a Florida doctor invents an icemaker, then blows cool air over the ice, which cooled the room considerable. He patents the idea, but can’t find an investor to make his dream a reality.
- In 1902 Willis Carrier builds an air circulator that blows air over cold coils to reduce humidity and room temperature at a lithograph and publishing company in Brooklyn. When other factories want the same technology, the Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America was born.
- 1931 marked the year that the first individual room air conditioner was built – and the same basic design is still being used today.
- In the 1950s the air conditioning boom really began; American contractors began installing them in every new build.
- By 1994, the Freon in air conditioners was linked to the depletion of the ozone layer. Units began being built with a less harmful refrigerant.
Most Efficient Las Vegas Air Conditioning
According to energy.gov, today’s state-of-the-art air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as the units made in the 1970s. While the lifespan of the typical a/c unit is 15 to 20 years, they suggest that even if your unit is just 10 years old, replacing it with an ultra-efficient air conditioner will save you 20% to 40% on your annual electric bill.
Finding the most efficient Las Vegas air conditioning unit means working closely with a professional HVAC contractor like Ambient Edge. These new units are rated by a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). Older systems have SEER ratings of six or less. The latest Energy Star® rated air conditioners are, at a minimum, 15% more efficient than models that don’t fall into this category.
Ambient Edge can help you select the right Las Vegas air conditioning unit to fit your home and lifestyle.
