When an air conditioner is working well, it’s easy to take for granted the comfort it brings to the home. However, keeping your A/C running efficiently and problem-free requires some attention to details that you should not ignore. Here are A/C mistakes to avoid making.
Ignoring the Air Filter
The air filter keeps the system running smoothly by keeping particles out of the moving parts. A dirty air conditioner is an inefficient air conditioner, and filthy air filters can quickly lead to this. Filters clogged with debris also block airflow, further reducing efficiency because the fan has to work harder.
Overworking the Unit
Overworking your cooling system inevitably leads to the need for an A/C repair visit. To avoid this, understand that the hotter your home is, the harder your A/C has to work to cool it down. Reduce the cooling load by sealing air leaks, covering windows with thermal shades and adding insulation, especially in the attic.
Your air conditioner also feels the strain if you adjust the temperature settings up and down frequently or if there’s a large variance between temperatures. Avoid turning the thermostat up high when you’re away and then try to cool an overly hot home when you come home by turning it down again. Doing so strains the system and reduces efficiency. Instead, keep the settings at a comfortable temperature with only a few degrees of variance.
Not Scheduling Regular Service Visits
Many things can go wrong with an A/C. You can avoid unexpected problems if you schedule air conditioner maintenance visits once or twice per year. Your contractor will check the system thoroughly, conduct any cleaning necessary and make sure all parts are working as they should.
