Even if you live in the mountains, summers are usually unbearably hot in the Southwest. Temperatures are normally well over 80 degrees in the mountains and the mercury goes even higher in the valleys, with temperatures often topping 100 degrees. Rather than rely on your air conditioner to do all the work (and pay the high electric bill that comes with its efforts), there are quite a few things you can do to reduce the overall need for air conditioning in your Kingman, AZ home.
Block the Sun
One of the easiest and most effective steps you can take is to block the sun from coming in your windows. Closing your blinds, lowering your shades, drawing the curtains — do whatever it takes to block the sun from coming in your windows.
Strategic Openings
Keep your windows closed during the hottest part of the day, but when the temperature dips below the setting on your thermostat, open all the windows. You want to make sure you are letting cool air in when possible and keeping warm air out — with one exception. Hot air rises, so you may need to open a window in your upstairs or attic to give a place for warmed air to escape.
Regular Maintenance
Air conditioners are most efficient when airflow is abundant, and this is especially true in the Southwest. In order to keep air moving freely, regularly changing filters can help your air conditioner run more efficiently, so you’ll use it less.
Ceiling Fan
If you are seriously about reducing the need for air conditioning, add a ceiling fan. According to the Department of Energy, a fan makes a room feel roughly 4 degrees cooler.
