While it is often a good idea to do some of the work around your house yourself to save a few bucks, there are some jobs that are just not a great idea to tackle on your own. One of these is ductwork. While you can certainly remove the grill and vacuum the outermost parts of your ducts, you may not have the tools necessary to perform a thorough duct cleaning job.
Of course, you can always get these tools from your local hardware store. However, it may be a better idea to have a professional provide your Spring Hill air duct cleaning services simply because of any unforeseen issues that might pop up that you may not be prepared for. For instance, what happens if your ducts have holes in them, and dust ends up blowing out all over the house?
At Ambient Edge, our team of licensed professionals has been performing ductwork for over two decades. We know what to do to ensure thorough cleaning while also looking for potential obstacles in the process. For a thorough cleaning with fewer headaches, give Ambient Edge a call today, and we’ll set you up with our next available service call.
Why Clean Your Air Ducts?
There are many good reasons to clean your air ducts, not the least of which being indoor air pollution. Do you want to breathe in the stuff that collects in your air ducts? Of course not. While you may worry that disturbing this buildup of debris may cause it to filter throughout your home, ignoring it and letting it pile up will do the same thing. It’s much healthier to simply clean it out and get rid of it.
And we’re not just talking dust and dirt here, but also mold, pests, and potentially even residue from leftover cleaning products and other contaminants that can make you and those you live with sick. No matter whether you do it or hire a company to do it, cleaning your air ducts is crucial to your health and the health of anyone who steps foot into your house.
When to Clean Your Ducts
Experts recommend you clean your air ducts every three to five years at a minimum. Of course, if you grow comfortable with cleaning your ducts yourself, then you can do them every year or so – knock yourself out! And, depending on your lifestyle, some people need to clean their ducts more often than others, particularly if you do a lot of cooking at home, or if you smoke or live with someone who does.
Tools You Need to Clean Your Air Ducts
If you’d like to take a stab at cleaning your own air ducts, here are some of the tools you will need:
- Power Drill: While you may be able to do just fine with a screwdriver, a power drill will save you time and energy removing the screws that secure the ductwork.
- Nut Driver: You really only need a nut driver if the bolts that secure your ductwork are different sizes. Else, a simpler bolt remover should be fine.
- Flex Duct Brush: A flex duct brush is a nice addition because you can attach it to your drill, providing for a more thorough cleaning job.
- Vacuum: While a normal vacuum may suffice, it might just be a good idea to secure an industrial-strength vacuum, particularly one with a variety of attachments, so you can more thoroughly suck out all the dust from your ductwork.
And don’t forget the microfiber cleaning cloths to remove dust and to wipe the interiors down!
You should also have a new air filter at the ready. In fact, if you plan your duct cleaning around the changing of the air filter in your furnace, you can make a day of it and get both out of the way at the same time.
Preventing Dust and Debris Buildup
There are some measures you can take to ensure your ducts stay as clean as possible. One such measure is to install HEPA air filters over your air supply registers. These filters should trap more of the pollutants that could potentially end up in your ductwork.
Another thing you can do is seal up any gaps you notice between the duct and the wall. Dust, like water, can creep into any seam, so the more seams you caulk up, the cleaner your ducts will be.
