When your air conditioner is not working as it should, and your home is getting hotter than you can tolerate, it may be time to call in the team at Ambient Edge for help. There are a number of potential problems that could occur, and one of them is the AC compressor.
You can learn about compressor replacement and air conditioning repair, but it may be easier (and more affordable) to let the pros on our team handle the process.
How to Change the Compressor on an Air Conditioner
If you are interested in replacing a compressor on an air conditioner in your home, you can certainly learn to do it yourself. However, it can be a bit tricky and requires some specific knowledge and tools. If you do not have those, we recommend having a licensed technician at Ambient Edge help you.
There are many situations where you may wish to learn how to change a compressor from an AC system. However, fair warning: you may need some mechanical and electrical skills (including some wiring knowledge). That can be problematic for most people and can lead to risks to safety if you try to do it yourself.
There are several steps to take during this process if you plan to do it yourself. We strongly encourage you to know what your warranty says if the AC is newer so that you do not do anything that could violate it. Here are the steps you are likely to need to take.
Recover All of the Freon from the System
If your air conditioner uses freon, you will need to recover it, meaning you need to remove it. That means setting up the proper gauges, recovery tank, and recovery machine, opening all nobs and ports, and then letting it flow to the recovery tank. When your suction pressure reaches 0 psi, you know it is all drained.
Unhooking the System
The next step is to unhook the machine and gauges and then pull out the cores from the suction. This then requires you to remove the lid from the air conditioner, which could mean cutting or removing the wires going to the condenser motor (make sure you have turned the power off at the breaker before doing this). You will need to remove the wiring setup and remember how to put it back together.
Remove the Wiring
You will need to remove the three wires going from the compressor CRS to the contractor and capacitor and dispose of them because it is better to rewire them.
From here, you will need to remove the foot bolts on the compressor, remove the copper lines, lift it out of the machine, and then set up the four new rubber feet.
Getting the Job Done
You will then need to place the new compressor into the system where the old one was, install the compressor feet bolts, and use sandpaper to clean up the suction and discharge lines.
You will need to add the filter drier and insert the suction and discharge lines. When conducting compressor replacement, you also need to install new cores into the access valves.
You Might Not Be Ready to Do the Work Yourself
As you can see, the process of replacing an AC compressor is a bit complex (we only offered some basic directions and steps here to demonstrate that complexity).
The key to remember is that this is one of the largest systems in your home, and any small mistake can be dangerous to you and to the system itself. There are a few reasons why you should call on Ambient Edge to do this for you instead:
- We know how to complete the process according to manufacturer recommendations: Our team can ensure that you are completing the process exactly as the air conditioner’s manufacturer expects (and that could protect your warranty as well).
- Our certified technicians will have the tools and resources to do the job properly. There is no need for you to go out and buy all of the necessary channel locks and specific tools for this job when we can do that for you and keep more money in your pocket.
- You want it done properly the first time. There is nothing like a hot day without AC in this area, and the fact is, it will take you several hours to do the work yourself. Alternatively, you could turn to our team to get the job done properly.
