During the summer months, you can imagine that if you run your air conditioner all the time, then you may be more likely to suffer certain summer-related HVAC problems. But what issues, in particular, should you keep an eye out for?
Keep reading for some of the more common summer problems that can affect your HVAC system. If any of the more serious problems happens to befall your HVAC system, don’t panic. Ambient Edge can help. Just give us a call, and we’ll be more than happy to assist you.
Higher Energy Bills
One thing you can certainly expect to experience during those hot summer months is a higher utility bill from your air conditioner running morning, noon, and night. You may think this is just a fact of life, and there’s not much you can do about it, but that’s not actually true.
One thing you can do is to upgrade your air conditioning unit. This may not sound like the most ideal situation financially, but while you may lay out a lot of money up front, the savings certainly pay off in the long run. When you have a more efficient AC unit, it doesn’t come on as frequently and it doesn’t run as hard. You end up paying for half the usage and enjoy the same amount – or more – of the comfort. Not a bad trade!
If your AC unit is more than 10 years old, then replacement is, without question, the smartest thing to do before the summer hits. When we’re called to repair units over 10 years old, we typically encourage our customers to replace their units anyway. After a certain point, you’re better off putting the money you’d spend on a repair into a brand-new unit so that you can enjoy a longer period without any issues.
Compressor Failure
When the compressor in your air conditioner dies, this is just as serious as your “check engine” light coming on in your car. Even worse, 99% of the time, the compressor fails as a result of something more minor breaking down, like an electrical issue or poor air flow due to a dirty filter, which leads to a chain reaction with an awful conclusion.
Signing up for preventive maintenance is a surefire way to make sure smaller issues don’t turn into huge problems. Ambient Edge offers preventive maintenance contracts wherein we check on your system annually and tune it up to ensure it doesn’t give you problems over the course of the summer (or even year-round).
Dirty Filters
A dirty air conditioner filter can cause a myriad of problems. That is a shame, because these problems are so easily preventable. We can’t even tell you the amount of service calls we answer every year due to a dirty filter. There are just too many to count.
Before you even turn on your air conditioner for the first time this season, give the filter a thorough cleaning. You could even replace it so you know you’re starting fresh. From there, how often you clean it depends on how often you use your AC, but experts recommend you replace your filter every 90 days or so – or every 60 days if you have pets.
When you allow your filter to clog up with dust and debris, this can cause any number of parts within the air conditioner to break down, which can lead to costly repairs and replacements. Keep on top of your filter, and your air conditioner should remain in good working order for a very long time.
Electrical Damage
Your electrical lines tend to take a beating in the summer. When we’re outside more, working around the yard with all kinds of lawn tools, we’re more likely to damage our electric lines, which can affect our HVAC systems. Pets can also damage the wires because we let them out more during the summer, and when they’re outside and bored, they may chew on the wires simply out of curiosity or boredom. Not only is this dangerous to Fido, but it’s bad for your HVAC system, too.
The best way to prevent problems with your electrical wires is to simply be more careful. Be sure not to nick or damage the lines when you’re outside with the lawnmower or weed whacker, and keep an eye on any pets you let go outside for an extended period of time.
