Leakages
If you notice a puddle forming around your water heater, this could be the sign of a big problem. Typically, you will notice leaks after the heater has recently heated up, as the heat causes the metal to expand, which allows water to leak from any slight cracks you may have that don’t leak while the heater is cool. You may not need to replace your water heater if the leak is coming from the fittings or connections.
You should also double-check the temperature/pressure overflow pipe for leaks. However, if your fittings, connections, and overflow pipe are all dry, then a water heater replacement is probably in order. We will help you through the process, and answer your questions, such as how much does it cost to replace a water heater?
Rust in Your Water
If you notice rust in your hot water, this could be a sign that the inside of your water heater is rusting. This means that your water heater may also start leaking soon if it hasn’t already. The best way to check for rust is to fill up some larger containers with water. If you find rust in your hot water but not in your cold, then this may be a sign that you need a new water heater.
To combat rust, you can add certain minerals to your water, such as magnesium, aluminum, or zinc. You can add these in the form of anode rods. Just, if you use more than one rod, make sure both are composed of the same metal, else they could react poorly with each other and cause more of a problem in your heater.
No Hot Water
Having no hot water is usually a good clue that your water heater is done-for. If you already schedule annual flushes of your water tank and you still don’t have hot water, it’s a pretty good bet that your water heater needs replacing.
However, if you don’t schedule annual flushes, schedule one and see how it goes. Ambient Edge performs annual flushes of water heaters, which is the removal of the build-up of mineral deposits that form over time and that causes your water heater to work harder, eventually leading to a breakdown.
Also, if you know you have hard water, you can also invest in water conditioning chemicals, which will help keep your water heater running efficiently for as long as possible.
Strange Noises
Like anything else, no matter how well you take care of your water heater, you’ll need to replace it at some point. And if it’s making strange noises, it’s probably the heater’s death rattle, telling you it doesn’t have much time left.
The reason for these strange noises is the buildup of sediment that inevitably forms at the bottom of the tank. As the sediment cools and is reheated over time, it will eventually harden. When this happens, the layer of hardened sediment may cause the heater to make rumbling noises or banging sounds as the water heater heats up.
This is a sign that the longer your water heater runs in this condition, the less efficiently it will run, and the more damage your heater will suffer. Once you start hearing these noises, prepare to replace your heater.
