Has your boiler stopped working, and you’re not sure why? There are several reasons why your boiler may not be running as it should. Check out some of our troubleshooting tips below to see if you may be able to fix the problem yourself without having to call in a professional.
If, however, you have tried the below tips and still cannot get your boiler to start, then it’s time to hire a professional. At Ambient Edge, our technicians are available day and night, whenever you need us, to get your boiler up and running again in no time. Give us a call to set up a service appointment.
No Heat/Hot Water
Having no heat or hot water is perhaps the most common of the service calls we receive for boilers that aren’t working. Unfortunately, this is not always an easy problem to diagnose, however, the two most common culprits are your pressure level and your thermostat. You could have a broken diaphragm or airlock, or issues with your valves, thermostat or water levels.
In many of these cases, all you need is a new part to get your boiler up and running again, which our technicians at Ambient Edge can install for you in no time. Sometimes the issue is more complicated than needing a part, but without looking at your boiler we often can’t know for sure until we get there.
Gas Issues
If your boiler runs on natural gas, and you think the reason it stopped running is due to a gas issue, do not attempt to fix the boiler yourself unless you are a licensed technician with experience in this area. You should only trust gas-related problems to gas-certified technicians. Our team at Ambient Edge has certification in this area.
The only thing you can do in this situation by yourself is to check if the gas supply to your boiler somehow switched off. If so, then simply switch it back on. If you aren’t sure how to check this, see if you are having any problems with your other gas-dependent appliances. If so, then this is potentially an issue with your gas line – something you definitely should not handle as a non-professional.
Electric Issues
If, however, your boiler runs on electricity, there are a few more things you can do. First, just like the gas boiler, check to see if the electric going to the boiler switched off somehow. If so, simply turning it back on should solve the problem.
If your fuse box recently tripped, whether due to a power outage or socket overload, then you can reset your boiler by activating the reset switch. You can still perform this “soft reset” even if your breaker box did not recently trip, as that may sometimes be all the boiler needs to get back to doing its job. However, if none of these steps work with your electric boiler, then it’s time to call in a professional to have a look.
Plumbing Issues
Believe it or not, your boiler may not be working due to issues with your plumbing. You may have a frozen pipe that isn’t allowing water to flow through your boiler properly. Or, if you turn your water off during the winter, you may have forgotten to turn it back on before attempting to use your boiler again. You may also have an issue with your water pressure.
There may also be issues with the plumbing within the boiler itself, such as issues relating to the boiler’s valves or pumps. Not only should you not attempt to fix issues like these yourself unless you are a certified technician but doing so can even be illegal if you are putting your own health at risk.
The better idea in this situation is to call a licensed professional. Not only will you be protecting yourself, but you’re also saving yourself the trouble of making the problem worse if you’re not sure what you’re doing.
