Cleaning your HVAC system is the most effective way to extend its life. Take your air conditioner’s coils, for example. You should clean the AC coils once a year, maybe even more often, depending on how frequently your unit runs.
When your evaporator and condenser coils get dirty, you can use over 30% more energy every time your air conditioner runs. This is wear-and-tear on the system, which also translates into a higher energy bill.
Many folks either fear or simply don’t like cleaning their HVAC systems themselves. Either they don’t want to get dirty, or they’re afraid they’ll break something. No worries – cleaning HVAC systems is only one of the things our team at Ambient Edge does best! Give us a call today to schedule your HVAC cleaning.

Air Filter Maintenance
If you’ve checked out any of our other pages on HVAC maintenance, surely you have seen we discuss air filters in almost every one of them. That’s because keeping your air filters clean, and changing them when you can no longer clean them properly, is essential to keeping your system running efficiently.
The best thing about a filter is that it is one of the easiest things to take care of in your HVAC system. Simply clean it with soap and water and if you can no longer see through it when you hold it up to the light, it’s time to replace it!
Unfortunately, because air filters are not as visible as the other parts of an HVAC system, many folks forget about them. Forgetting about them for months on end allows them to fill up with all kinds of dirt, debris, and even mold. Guess where those particles end up going? That’s right – into your ductwork and, eventually, into the air you breathe.
When your HVAC system is trying its hardest to run with all of those obstacles in its way, eventually it’s going to give up and break down. This costs you time and money you could have otherwise saved in cleaning and changing that dinky little filter every so often.
Clean your filters once a month, more if it has been a particularly busy season, or if you live with a smoker or with pets. Replace them every 60 to 90 days. This should be enough to keep your system operating efficiently, cleanly, and safely.
Furnace Maintenance
For most folks, especially those who have never worked with furnaces before, the idea of cleaning one sounds difficult, if not impossible. That’s fine. Our team at Ambient Edge can come and clean it for you and, while we’re there, ensure it’s in proper working order.
However, there are things you can do on your own to help your furnace. You can wipe down any visible dust, dirt, or grime. You can vacuum any debris around the machine that you’ll inevitably find wedged inside it months down the road.
You can check on its flame from time to time to make sure it’s still a healthy blue color. If it has streaks of red or orange in it, that’s your furnace’s way of telling you that it needs either cleaning or an adjustment.
Air Conditioner Maintenance
Cleaning an air conditioner is not as difficult as cleaning a furnace, that much is certain. However, you’ll need to clean your outdoor unit. Of course, outdoor units accumulate more dirt, and more often, than indoor units, so you need to pay special attention to your outdoor unit if you have one.
For indoor units, your main concern is to keep the filter clean and keep away any objects that could disrupt airflow, such as kids’ toys, a piece of furniture, etc. For in-depth cleaning jobs, if you don’t feel confident attempting it yourself, don’t – our team can come out and help.
As far as your outside unit goes, take care of dust, dirt, and foliage. Keep all vegetation trimmed back about two feet, and sweep or leaf-blow out any dirt, leaves, grass clippings, or twigs that get too close to the unit. You can also hose down the unit, but just make sure the water is on a lower pressure to prevent damage to the unit.
