When you clean your HVAC system, you are helping extend its life. The more dust and debris that catches up in your furnace and air conditioner, the more often they will break down. This is not only a headache when they break down during the worst possible times, but it also costs you money you could have otherwise saved by taking better care of your HVAC system.
Of course, even the best care can’t prevent some breakdowns from happening, and for those breakdowns, you have Ambient Edge! With as many years of experience in this industry as we have, you can feel confident that we will treat your HVAC system with the attention and care it deserves. Call us today to schedule service, or to learn more about how our preventive maintenance plans can extend the life of your HVAC system.
Cleaning Your Air Conditioning Unit
When you clean your air conditioner, you need to pay special attention to the outdoor unit if you have one, as this will of course get dirty more often. For your inside unit, paying attention to its filters is most important, along with keeping any obstacles to air flow away from your machine.
With your outside unit, you want to look for any dirt, grass clippings, leaves or twigs nearby that the unit could suck up and remove them. You’ll also want to clip any plants that may be growing too close to the unit within a two-foot radius of it.
Turn off the power before you attempt to clean the unit itself. A standard garden hose should help you do the trick insofar as cleaning its exterior. Just make sure the water pressure isn’t up too high, or you risk damaging the unit. You can also gently wash the condenser coils when not in use.
Maintaining Your Furnace
When it comes to cleaning your furnace, many folks would rather just leave this to the professionals. After all, the furnace is generally dirtier than your air conditioning unit tends to become, and it can be more dangerous to mess around with if you don’t know what you’re doing.
You can still take steps to maintain your furnace even if you don’t feel confident enough to get in there and root around. One of the simplest things you can do is check the color of the flame. If it’s blue, then you’re in good shape. If it has streaks of yellow or red in it, then you’ll need to call a professional to come in and either clean or adjust the unit.
Vacuuming around your furnace isn’t a bad idea either. The more dust and debris you can remove around and on the exterior of your furnace, the less that can get in its way of operating properly.
Don’t Neglect Your Air Filters
Air filters are the most important, and typically the easiest, parts to take care of on your HVAC unit. You simply clean them about once a month, or more often, depending on how often your HVAC system is running, and replace them every 60 to 90 days.
If you have pets, or if you are (or live with) a smoker, then you’ll need to change the filter closer to that 60-day mark. But if your HVAC system only runs occasionally, or if you’re often not home, then you should be able to stretch out the life of the filter up to that 90-day mark. Don’t wait longer than that, though. The more that can build up on your filter, the more that can escape into your air and bog down your unit, which will eventually cause it to break down entirely.
A good tip is to hold up the filter to the light after you clean it. If you can see through it, then it’s good to go. If you can’t, then it’s time to replace it.
