A home energy audit can be incredibly helpful in understanding how much energy your home uses and finding ways to cut down on that energy consumption. Not only is a reduction in energy good for your utility bill, but it’s also good for the environment.
If you live in North Las Vegas, NV and are interested in having a home energy audit conducted, Ambient Edge can help. Give us a call to schedule your audit.
The Energy Audit Process
Here is how we at Ambient Edge conduct a typical home energy audit.
First, one of our energy auditors will take a look at the outside of your home to see if you have any issues that can affect how your home utilizes energy. For instance, any windows or walls that allow drafts into the home can cause an increase in your energy usage.
If you have an attic, our auditor will take a peek to ensure your insulation is properly installed and evenly distributed. He’ll also check all the holes where your electrical line are installed to make sure they are properly sealed.
Next, our auditor will check out your heating system. If he can tell your equipment is old, typically over 10 years old – or close enough to it – he may recommend you upgrade to a more energy-efficient system. He’ll also check on the furnace’s filter to see if it needs to be replaced.
Finally, if you have a basement, the auditor will check to make sure the ducts down there are not compromised and thereby allowing heat and energy to get out.
Blower Door Test
Another test our energy auditor will perform is something called the “blower door test.” When an auditor conducts a blower door test, he will close the doors and windows in your home. Then he’ll turn on a device called a “blower door machine” to depressurize your home. Once this is complete, he’ll use an infrared camera to pinpoint exactly where the cold air, if any, is getting in.
This is an accurate way of determining exactly where the drafts are and how severe they are, which allows HVAC technicians to more easily find and repair those areas.
Lighting
In addition to your heating and air conditioning, lighting is another area where people don’t realize they use a lot of extra energy when they don’t need to.
Our energy auditor will inspect your lamps and light fixtures to see what kind of light bulbs you are using. If you are using an incandescent light bulb, which is a fancy term for your average, standard lightbulb, then the auditor will recommend you switch to either LED or CFL lights to reduce your energy usage and cost.
The Right Time for an Energy Audit
Is there a “right time” for an energy audit? Actually, yes – it’s best to have an energy audit done before you purchase your home because the HVAC technician can then use that information to craft a better HVAC system for you before you even move in. However, if you already have a home, then we recommend having an energy audit done every five years.
This is true even if you had an energy audit before you moved in. Ducts wear out, filters get dirty, parts break down. Appliances and devices become inefficient over time, and having someone check them every few years gives you confidence in knowing you are doing all you can to keep your home as energy-efficient as possible.
Can You Perform Your Own Energy Audit?
While Ambient Edge is in the business of saving our customers money, and we’d love to tell you how to save money on your energy audit, the short answer to this question is, unfortunately, no. You cannot perform your own energy audit unless you have experience in this sort of thing.
Every homeowner probably knows which areas of their home are drafty or have poor insulation, and they can also replace those devices and appliances that they know are no longer (or never were) energy-efficient. However, you still need a home energy audit for those issues that are not so easy to see with the naked eye. That’s where Ambient Edge comes in.
