Sounds Your HVAC Makes, and What They Mean
HVAC systems make plenty of sounds that are normal, and from time to time even some that are not. What follows is a list of the types of sounds you may hear from your HVAC system. You can rest easy knowing that some of these sounds come with the job. However, you can also have a heads-up on which sounds are telling you your HVAC system needs a doctor!
Clicking
Depending on the clicking, a clicking sound can be a perfectly normal sound for an HVAC system. Your HVAC unit will normally “click” when it is turning “on” or “off.” When clicking becomes a problem, though, is when you hear it repeatedly, and it sounds like it’s coming from the control panel. You may also hear it coming from the outside compressor if you have an outdoor AC unit. This may be a sign of an electrical issue, and you will need to call a professional to take a look.
Squealing or Screeching
A squeal or a screech is never a good sound. However, the issue is not as bad as it sounds…literally. Squealing or screeching is usually a sign of either a bad belt or a lack of lubrication. If the motor’s belt is the problem, you’ll want to fix that right away to prevent your blower from breaking down.
If the screeching is telling you there is a lubrication issue, you should be able to kill the noise yourself simply by adding lubricant to oil the motor. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, that’s fine. Our professionals can do it for you. No job is too big or too small for Ambient Edge!
Banging or Rattling
A banging or rattling sound coming from your HVAC system may be a sign that something is either loose or broken in your furnace’s motor or blower. Does the banging sound get louder when the blower runs? If so, something is more than likely broken. Turn the system off, and call a professional to come and look at it immediately.
Hissing
Does it sound like a snake has gotten loose in your HVAC system? If so, you need to determine first where the hissing is coming from. Is it your AC or your furnace?
If the hissing is coming from your AC, you may have a refrigerant leak. This may also be a sign that the internal pressure within the system is dangerously high. In either event, turn it off, disconnect the power, and call a technician immediately.
If the hissing is coming from your furnace, you more than likely have a leaky air duct, which our professionals can repair. Else, it could be another type of leak within the furnace itself, which you will also need a professional to come and inspect.
Whistling
If your HVAC system sounds more like an old-fashioned train than an HVAC system, you may have a more serious problem on your hands. Whistling or screaming sounds are your HVAC’s way of sending out an S.O.S. signal.
If the sound is coming from your air conditioning unit, turn the power off, if it hasn’t turned off already as a safety measure. Do not fiddle with it – just call a professional as soon as possible.
Your unit may be experiencing dangerously high pressure or a failing compressor. In either case, it is not something you should attempt to fix on your own. A refrigerant leak is a health risk to you, your family, and your animals, and it is dangerous for the environment. Leave this one to the professionals.
